About Me and Photos of Calke and Beyond

Peter

“Welcome to Photos of Calke and Beyond! My name is Peter and this website is my way of sharing the beauty of Calke Abbey and its surrounding estate. It’s also a wonderful excuse to get out and capture more of the stunning scenery that inspires me, and to give my existing photos a place to be enjoyed.

My journey with photography began in my teenage years, inspired by my father who introduced me to the world of cameras and photography. Initially, I was drawn to creating ‘arty’ photographs, exploring abstract compositions and unique perspectives. Over time, however, my focus shifted towards documenting the places I visit, creating a visual record of my experiences. And with the remarkable advancements in mobile phone technology, I now find myself using my phone as my primary camera – proof that inspiration can be captured with the tools we have at hand!

My connection with Calke Abbey runs deep. The National Trust took over its care in 1985 and opened it to the public in 1989. I joined the National Trust that same year. In 2003, I made South Derbyshire my home, placing me just a short 20-minute drive from Calke. Since then, I’ve been a regular visitor, photographing its ever-changing landscapes and historic architecture for the past 20 years.

Now retired, I have the pleasure of visiting Calke Abbey on average twice a week. This allows me to witness the subtle shifts in light, the seasonal transformations, and the everyday moments that make this place so special. My aim is to share these moments with you, offering a glimpse into the heart of Calke through my lens.

I invite you to explore the galleries and experience the magic of Calke Abbey through my photographs. If you have any questions or simply want to share your own connection to this remarkable place, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for joining me on this visual journey!”
